Kwartludium ensemble was founded in 2002 and is composed of alumni of three Music Academies - Warsaw, Bydgoszcz and Gdańsk. The name derives from the first piece by Bartosz Kowalski-Banasewicz written for the ensemble to perform. The project itself derived from the cooperation with Carl Bergstrom Nielsen who is a Danish graphic scores composer. The result of this cooperation was a series of concerts that took place in Copenhagen in 2011. Rasmussen and Regin Petersen. At this occassion the ensemble cooperated with a prominent sound art Robin Rimbaud a.k.a. Scanner. Maciej Walczak is responsible for the visual side of the project. He uses his own programs and a projector to process the graphic scores into visuals. An important part of the ensemble's activity is contemporary improvised music. Kwartludium has performed graphic and intuitive compositions of some of the most prominent characters of new music such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Carl Bergstrom Nielsen, Roman Haubenstock Ramati, Cornelius Cardew, and Dubrovko Detoni. This year the musicians are planning to release an album called 'Kwartludium Jacaszek' containing the music of Olivier Messiaen.
